United States President Joe Biden signaled this Friday that he was confident that an agreement on the country's border with Mexico could be reached next week, at least in the Democratic-controlled Senate, adding that “changes are needed” significant changes in policies” regarding the topic.
Congressional Republicans blocked an emergency fund for Ukraine in an effort to implement new security policies on the border with Mexico. They blame the Biden administration for the flow of immigrants entering US territory.
“I think that next week we will be able to move forward on something, at least in the Senate, and I am confident that it will be a bipartisan package,” said the president to an audience of mayors who visited the White House.
“Now it’s a question for the speaker of the House and the Republicans there: are they ready to act too?” he asked.
In the House, where Republicans have a slim majority, some radical members of the party have threatened to try to overthrow House Speaker Mike Johnson if he brings a security agreement to Parliament as part of a package that also includes aid to Kiev.
This Friday, Biden acknowledged that there need to be changes in immigration policy.
“I think we need significant policy changes at the border, including changes to our asylum system,” he said.
