The US president spoke by phone with his family George Floyd, The White House announced today, as jurors meet behind closed doors to decide whether or not the white police officer accused of the 46-year-old African-American’s death last May in Minneapolis was guilty.
“The president Biden “She spoke with George Floyd’s family yesterday (Monday) to find out more about her and to make sure she prays for her,” White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki wrote on Twitter.
The jurors withdrew yesterday to discuss and rule on the guilt of Derek Sauvin, the 45-year-old former police officer who knelt on Floyd’s neck, trying to arrest him for a minor offense. For nine minutes, Sauvin knelt over the 46-year-old, who was lying face down on the ground, with his hands handcuffed on his back.
The trial was held in a tense atmosphere, with daily demonstrations taking place again in the city, following the recent death of a young African-American man who was shot by a white police officer during a roadside check.
