United States President Joe Biden spoke with New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy about Friday's earthquake (5), according to the White House.
“The president said his administration is in contact with local authorities and will provide assistance if necessary,” the US government added.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency is in contact with the New York governor's office, according to a U.S. Homeland Security spokesperson.
Earlier this Friday (5), press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre posted on social media that President Biden had been informed about the earthquake and was monitoring the “potential impacts”.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas also said his department is monitoring the fallout.
The epicenter of the 4.8 magnitude earthquake was northeast New Jersey, less than 50 miles from New York City, according to the USGS.
