US President Joe Biden is speaking on Saturday (13) with a moderate group of House Democrats known as the New Democratic Coalition, according to multiple sources heard by CNN .
The conversation comes after Biden spoke to another group, the Congressional Progressive Caucus, earlier on Saturday (13) as the president tries to shore up his support for Democratic lawmakers.
The requests give the president an opportunity to speak directly to his critics: each of the 19 House Democrats who have publicly called for Biden to step down from this year’s presidential race and who belong to one of two groups.
Biden makes connection with another Democratic alliance
A planned call between President Joe Biden and the Congressional Progressive Caucus was underway shortly before 4 p.m. local time, a source on the call told CNN .
It was one of two calls Biden is holding today with key groups in the House Democratic caucus, and it was part of broader direct outreach Biden is conducting as he tries to assuage concerns within his party.
Caucus Chair Pramila Jayapal shared a statement after the call ended: “We spoke candidly with the President about our concerns and asked tough questions about the path forward. We appreciate his willingness to respond and speak thoughtfully to our members.”
The calls come after virtual meetings with the political wings of the Asian and Latino groups, Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus and Congressional Hispanic Caucus, on Friday (12), according to sources familiar with the calls.
