Biden talks to leaders of Egypt and Qatar about ceasefire in Gaza

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi received a telephone call this Monday (29) from US President Joe Biden to discuss the latest developments in negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza and the risks of a military escalation in Rafah, according to a statement from the Egyptian presidency.

The Egyptian presidential spokesman said the call also touched on the exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners, one of the main sticking points in any comprehensive ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel.

A Hamas delegation visited Cairo to deliberate on Israel's response to a ceasefire agreement.

The risks of a military escalation in Rafah were also highlighted, in relation to what a catastrophe would be in a humanitarian crisis that is already worsening and which would have an impact on the stability and security of the region, according to the statement.

“President Al-Sisi stressed the need for full and adequate access to humanitarian aid, reviewing the intense Egyptian efforts in this regard.”

The two presidents also emphasized the need to work to prevent the expansion of the conflict and reaffirmed the importance of the two-state solution as a means to achieve security, peace and stability in the region,” said the statement from the Egyptian Presidency.

Biden also had a phone call Monday night with Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar, whose country also has a mediating role in the conflict.

“During the phone call, they discussed the evolving situation in the Gaza Strip and the occupied Palestinian territories and the efforts of the two countries to reach an agreement on an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza,” Qatar said in a statement.
