Two sources at the closed-door meeting with Joe Biden campaign officials said the president’s team provided little new information to Democratic senators about the state of the campaign.
Instead, senators ended up doing most of the talking.
Some members have expressed deep concerns about the state of the campaign, and Biden’s team has responded by pointing to the president’s upcoming news conference, a scheduled interview with NBC and plans to campaign in battleground states next week.
There has been no indication from Biden’s team that he would drop out of the race, the sources said.
Officials did not present research or data to convince members, but instead called for another listening session, said a person briefed on the meeting.
“They didn’t come forward to plead their case, which they needed to do. It’s hard to see how that helped,” the source said.
A third source told CNN that it was a “serious, frank, constructive — sometimes emotional” exchange.
