US President Joe Biden told journalist Kevin Liptak of CNN who was not concerned about boycotts by leaders, including Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and other Central American leaders, at the Summit of the Americas.
Asked by Liptak if he was worried, he replied simply “no” as the press was escorted out of a meeting where Biden appeared with Vice President Kamala Harris and Caribbean leaders.
Mexico’s president’s decision to boycott this week’s summit of regional leaders in Los Angeles rendered months of work by President Joe Biden and other officials to convince him to attend was useless.
The decision by several countries to walk away from the summit, a protest against Biden’s decision not to invite Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua, highlighted the struggle over US influence in a region that has fractured politically and economically.
“Look, I thought it was important for him to come because I think when the whole world is there… it should be among leaders,” Biden said as he walked into the meeting that had already started.
“There’s a lot to talk about,” he said. “Are we talking about everything in front of the press?”
“No,” said Harris.
“My objective is to intensify the relationship with the Caribbean,” he said.
