US President Joe Biden plans to apply sanctions this week to hundreds of Russians serving in the country’s legislature, an official familiar with the announcement said.
The action is expected to kick off a series of new steps to punish Russia for the war in Ukraine.
Biden is expected to unveil the new sanctions on members of the Duma – part of the Russian parliament – while in Europe for a series of summit meetings this week.
The US had already sanctioned some members of the body, but this week’s announcement will expand the list.
Previously, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan predicted sweeping sanctions enacted jointly with American allies, which will be announced on Thursday.
He said the measures would ensure that individuals would not be able to escape sanctions already imposed by the West.
