The White House said on Friday (21) that US President Joe Biden and US security advisers will discuss the situation in Ukraine this weekend. The information was disclosed by White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki to journalists.
The meeting follows the meeting between Anthony Blinken, US Secretary of State, and Russian Chancellor Sergei Lavrov. Officials met on Friday in Geneva, Switzerland, to discuss tensions between Russia and Ukraine on the border between the two countries.
Lavrov had said this week that Russia had already “objectively” laid out its claims, and he expected the United States to respond in kind.
Russia asks the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) not to welcome Ukraine as a member. The country claims that this would mean an advance of the United States’ area of influence towards the East.
Russia has deployed around 100,000 troops on the border with Ukraine in recent months, while Ukrainian authorities have already warned of a Russian attack. President Vladimir Putin of Russia denies any intention to attack.
Ukraine was invaded by Russia in the past decade, when Putin supported separatist groups in the Crimea region, which the Eurasian power annexed after the incursion.
NATO, which brings together the richest countries in the West, has already expressed itself saying that it is not up to Russia to indicate who should or should not be part of the group.
This week, the European Union warned of an imminent war situation in the east.
