Biden to present decree on ‘ghost’ weapons today

US President Joe Biden will announce today a decree to deal with “ghost” weapons, the owners of which are difficult to locate as they do not have a serial number and which can be assembled in minutes.

The decree, which has been being drafted by the US government for a year, concerns this type of weapon, which, according to experts, is appearing more and more in the crime scenes in the USA.

According to the decree, the individual parts of these weapons that can be easily assembled will be subject to the same rules as the weapons sold, US government officials said.

In addition, those selling weapons assembly kits should now check the history of prospective buyers and enter a serial number on the various parts of the weapon.

The decree “will make it more difficult for criminals (…) to acquire undetected weapons”, improving the work of members of the security forces because “they will be able to gather the information they need to solve crimes” while ” “It will help reduce the number of undetectable weapons that have flooded our communities,” said Attorney General Merrick Garland.

From January 2016 to December 2021, according to the Alcohol, Tobacco and Weapons (ATF) service, law enforcement officers located approximately 45,240 weapons assembled by individuals, including in 692 homicides or homicide attempts. , announced the US Department of Justice.

During this time, the ATF was able to locate the owner of a “ghost” weapon in only 0.98% of cases, the same source added.

According to the non-governmental organization Gun Violence Archive, in 2021 more deaths from firearms were recorded than in 2020, a total of 20,726 deaths, not counting suicides.
