A White House official said US President Joe Biden should speak with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson as part of his quest for international unity against a potential Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The call should take place at 2:30 pm, Brasília time, according to the official.
Biden has continually warned of a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine, and is actively seeking international support, particularly from North Atlantic Treaty Organization member states, NATO, historical US allies.
The American leader told the Ukrainian president in a call on Sunday that the United States would respond “quickly and decisively” to possible Russian attacks on Ukraine, according to a White House statement.
Boris Johnson, whose administration is suffering from a crisis after the prime minister was linked to violations of health measures imposed on the British, has already spoken on the matter before. “British sanctions and other measures will be ready for any new Russian attack,” Johnson wrote in The Times on February 7.
“The government will ask parliament for new powers to apply sanctions to a wider range of Russian individuals and entities, including any company linked to the Russian state or operating in a sector of strategic importance to the Kremlin.”
On Saturday, Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin made a call to discuss border tensions. Biden warned Putin that the United States and its allies would respond “decisively and impose swift and severe consequences”, in the conversation that lasted about an hour.
Russian presidential adviser Yury Ushakov said the call was “balanced and professional” but that the United States and NATO had not addressed Russia’s security concerns.
