Biden to transfer US troops to Eastern Europe ‘in the short term’

US President Joe Biden declared on Friday (28) that he will transfer US troops to countries in Eastern Europe and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) “in the short term”.

The Pentagon has put about 8,500 US troops on standby for a possible deployment to Europe amid Russia’s military build-up near the Ukrainian border.

A call between Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky this Thursday (27) “didn’t go well,” a senior Ukrainian official told reporters. CNN, amid disagreements over the “risk levels” of a Russian attack.

The White House, however, disputed the official’s account, warning that anonymous sources were “leaking falsehoods”. The US government said Biden warned Zelensky that an imminent invasion is a “distinct possibility”.

Biden warned the Ukrainian president that a Russian attack could be imminent, saying an invasion was now virtually certain as the ground froze in late February, according to the Ukraine official.
