Biden vetoes bill that would allow Trump to appoint more judges

United States President Joe Biden vetoed a bill that would have created 63 new permanent judge positions. About a third of them would be appointed by Donald Trump.

The White House had previously said Biden would veto the bill, which would add permanent judges to some of the country’s most overburdened federal courts.

In the note that accompanied the veto, the president stated that the US Chamber, in his opinion, was unable to “resolve key issues in the legislation”.

“The efficient and effective administration of justice requires that these questions of necessity and attribution be studied and answered before creating permanent judges for lifetime justices,” Biden wrote.

The head of state also pointed out that politics was a real motivator behind part of the Republican Party’s support for the project.

“[O projeto] would create new judicial positions in states where senators sought to maintain existing judicial vacancies”, he commented.

“These efforts to keep seats open suggest that concerns about judicial economy and caseload are not the true motivating force behind passing this bill now,” he claimed.

Judges across the ideological spectrum have warned that a lack of staff has created a significant backlog of cases.

But after Trump’s victory in November, Democratic Party support for the project collapsed.
