Biden visits US troops at the Polish border

US President Joe Biden arrived very close to Ukraine’s border on Friday (25) when visiting a group of US soldiers from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Poland.

Biden has managed to maintain unity in the Western alliance despite concerns from European and NATO leaders about the escalation of military conflict caused by the Russian invasion. He landed in Jejuf, about 90 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, and was received by the Polish delegation at around six in the morning local time.

While still in Rzeszow, Biden received information about the humanitarian crisis and had his first contact with Polish President Andrzej Duda. After announcing a $1 billion package in support of Ukrainian refugees, the US leader ended the solidarity agenda in the border region and departed for Warsaw, where he arrived later in the day.

A new meeting to discuss the West’s next steps in the war and possible cooperation with Poland takes place this Saturday (26). NATO argues that direct intervention in Ukraine could lead to all-out war in Europe.

Tensions in Poland have been escalating since Russia bombed cities in western Ukraine. The population fears that the offensive will continue towards the west.

In the last month, the demand for weapons and ammunition has soared in the country. And the fear is not limited to the population. Since last week, planes arriving at Rzesvow airport have come across anti-aircraft batteries from Polish forces, the same place where Biden’s plane landed earlier this Friday.
