Biden wants ‘full accountability’ after US citizen’s death in West Bank

US President Joe Biden said on Wednesday (11) that Israel must do more to ensure that cases like the death of an American protester demonstrating against the expansion of settlements in the West Bank never happen again.

He stressed that the death of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, 26, who also has Turkish nationality, was “totally unacceptable”.

In a statement, Biden said that while Israel has taken responsibility for the death, the US government expects continued access to the investigation into the circumstances of the shooting.

“There needs to be full accountability. And Israel needs to do more to ensure that incidents like this never happen again,” Biden warned.

Protester shot dead

Eygi was shot dead last Friday (6) at a protest in Beita, a village near Nablus where Palestinians have been attacked by far-right Jewish settlers. Israel said the death was accidental.

Biden also criticized violence in the West Bank by “extremist Israeli settlers” and “Palestinian terrorists,” a day after U.S. officials demanded a review of Israeli military conduct in the occupied West Bank.

“I will continue to support policies that hold all extremists — Israelis and Palestinians — accountable for fomenting violence and standing in the way of peace,” the president said.
