US President Joe Biden has warned Israel against a potential occupation of the Gaza Strip, in one of the most notable public appeals as Israelis respond to this month’s terrorist attacks by Hamas.
In an interview with CBS’s “60 Minutes”, which aired on Sunday (15), Biden said it would be a “big mistake” for Israel to occupy Gaza. Israel has signaled it is preparing for a ground invasion of the Gaza Strip, even as a humanitarian crisis grows inside the Palestinian coastal enclave.
Biden has called for protecting civilians, and the US has been working to alleviate food, water and gas shortages.
“What happened in Gaza, in my opinion, is Hamas, and the extremist elements of Hamas do not represent all of the Palestinian people,” Biden told journalist Scott Pelley.
Biden said he believes Hamas should be eliminated entirely, “but there needs to be a Palestinian authority. There needs to be a path to a Palestinian State.”
The comments represent one of the few times the US president has called on Israel to exercise restraint in its response to the Hamas terrorist attacks, which left 1,400 people dead.
In response, Israel launched a massive bombing campaign in the northern Gaza Strip, from which Hamas launched the terrorist attack.
Michael Herzog, the Israeli ambassador to the United States, told Jake Tapper of CNN on Sunday, that Israel does not intend to occupy Gaza after the end of the conflict.
