Biden: «We will give Kiev 31 Abrams». What changes in Ukraine with the new tanks?

«We will be united in supporting Kiev, which is why we decided to send 31 Abrams tanks to Ukraine in the face of a situation that was becoming critical on the ground. It will still take some time. In these moments we must show ourselves united, above all to defend the sovereignty and integrity of an invaded country”. Speak in the plural the president of the United States Joe Biden because his choice is shared with the European allies with whom he spoke on the phone: Meloni, Macron, Sunak and Scholz, Italy, France, the United Kingdom and Germany.

«Kiev will achieve its strategic objectives thanks to our help, but the tanks will not be an offensive threat against Russia. We are especially grateful to the German Chancellor. It was a real acceleration on the part of Germany,” explained Biden. Already from January 24 it is known that Berlin will send 14 Leopard 2 tanks which will be joined by American Abrams tanks and other vehicles that could also arrive from Great Britain, as well as from other European countries. ORNetherlands, Poland, Norway, Finland, Spain and Finland they have said they are ready to give up some of the means of German production at their disposal. The European objective is to set up two battalions of Leopards to be sent to Kiev. That’s about 70 tanks.

It will take a long time to see them deployed (the vehicles must be brought and activated, soldiers and trained mechanics), but they are nonetheless means that could change the tide of war. The unlocking of supplies indicates the political will of the United States and Europe to maintain support to Ukraine.

Biden listed the countries that are contributing to the defense of Kiev with air defense systems, artillery and armored vehicles. There are Italy, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Holland, France, Slovakia, Canada, Norway, Poland and Sweden.

The thanks of the Ukrainian president arrived immediately Volodymyr Zelensky: «Thanks to US President Joe Biden for another important decision to supply the Abrams to Ukraine. I am grateful to the US people for their leadership support! It is an important step on the way to victory. Today the free world is united as never before for a common goal: the liberation of Ukraine. We are moving forward.”
