US President Joe Biden today confirmed that he would nominate a black woman to the US Supreme Court for the first time in history to replace the resigned progressive judge Steven Brier.
The Democratic president, who made this promise during his election campaign, clarified in statements made by the White House that he has not made his final decision and wants to make it public “at the end of February”.
He added that he was confident of two things: “The person I will nominate will have qualifications, personality, experience and an exceptional integrity. And this person will be the first black woman to be nominated to the US Supreme Court.”
A black judge, Clarence Thomas, currently holds a seat on the Supreme Court, which has nine lifelong members.
Of the 115 judges who held a seat on the court after its inception, there were only 5 women, four white and one Hispanic and two black men.
After arriving in the White House, Joe Biden, who was elected with the support of black voters, seeks to increase diversity in the country’s federal courts.
Today, he praised Judge Breyer, 83, 28 of whom are in the Supreme Court.
“He is an exemplary judge, fair, kind to his colleagues, prudent in his reasoning,” who worked tirelessly to realize the idea that law exists to help people, “said Joe Biden.
