Biden: Zelensky ‘did not want to hear’ warnings about Russian invasion

President Joe Biden has said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky did not heed warnings that Russia would invade his country in preparation for the February 24 attack, according to Bloomberg.

“I know a lot of people thought I might be exaggerating, but I knew, and we had evidence, that it would come from the border. There was no doubt. And Zelensky did not want to hear it, nor did many others,” he said. Biden on Friday during a fundraising event in Los Angeles.

Biden acknowledged that the possibility of Russian President Vladimir Putin launching a full-scale invasion may have seemed far-fetched, saying: “I understand why they did not want to hear it.”

Biden accused Putin of “trying to wipe out Ukraine’s culture and not just the nation” and said the Russian leader considered the capital, Kyiv, to be “the seat of Mother Russia.”

The Russian military has failed to occupy Kyiv, but has made progress in southern and eastern Ukraine, where Putin hopes to occupy the entire Donbas region. The Ukrainian army has launched a counterattack outside the city of Kharkov in the north and in the area around the occupied city of Kherson in the south.
