Biden’s exhortation to Zelensky: “Don’t give up”

“Do not give up”, was the prompting of the American president Joe Biden to his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky about the war against the Russian invaders, when the two leaders met today in Washington. “We’ll stand by your side,” stressed Biden, assuring Zelensky that Ukraine will continue to have US support.

Earlier today, President Biden had urged the US Congress to approve additional funding for Ukraine – before the Christmas holidays – and announced a new $200 million military aid package to Kiev.

For his part, Zelensky told Biden that his country is now less dependent on foreign aid and expressed gratitude for strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses. He even expressed the belief that the Ukrainian armed forces are strong enough to win the war against the Russian invaders. He wished, as he said, to discuss, among other things, the prospect of Ukraine joining the European Union.

The presidents of the two countries will hold a joint press conference after the conclusion of their meeting, which followed Zelensky’s visit to the Capitol.
