Biden’s popularity remains low, says international relations professor

Despite the Independence Day celebrations taking place in the United States this Monday (4), the popularity of President Joe Biden remains low, according to an analysis by the professor of International Relations at the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS) in an interview with CNN .

“What we’ve been noticing is that Biden’s popularity has been low. What the Biden administration, what Joe Biden, has been trying to do is try to decouple itself from this economic issue,” says the expert.

Regarding the country’s economy, rising inflation has been one of the main obstacles. The US Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE) Price Index, a key indicator of inflation, rose 7.1% in the first quarter compared with the same period in 2021, according to data released last Wednesday (29).

According to Motta, one of the strategies used by the US government has been to associate the negative results with external factors, such as the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

Given this scenario, the professor assesses the impacts of Biden’s results in the next elections in the country.

“If the American population perceives that there is a deterioration of their civil rights and links this deterioration to the Biden administration, this could greatly harm the next elections”, he evaluated.
