Biden’s popularity rises to 40%, the highest level in the last two months

US President Joe Biden’s approval rating rose this week to its highest level since early June, following a string of Democratic congressional victories, according to an Ipsos poll conducted on behalf of the Reuters news agency and published by the latter on Tuesday. .

A key finding of the two-day survey is that 40% of Americans approve of Mr. Biden’s performance in office. Despite the increase, this is one of the lowest rates recorded by a US president at this stage in his term.

However, the upward trend over the past three weeks has somewhat eased the anxiety among Democrats ahead of the Nov. 8 midterm elections, as many Americans struggle to cope with inflation and the problems of an economy that has not yet recovered from the crisis of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

On Sunday, the Senate passed a bill to fight climate change, lower drug prices and raise taxes on some businesses. The text, strongly supported by Mr. Biden, is expected to be approved by the House of Representatives, which already marks a victory for the Democrats and is likely to boost the enthusiasm of their supporters ahead of the election.

Mr Biden signed another law on Tuesday to subsidize semiconductor production and boost efforts to make the US more competitive with China in science and technology.

In the poll released yesterday, 78 percent of respondents who said they lean toward Democrats approve of Joe Biden’s job, up from 69 percent a month earlier. Just 12% of Republicans express a positive view of the current president’s job. This percentage has remained more or less unchanged in recent weeks.

Mr. Biden saw his approval rating slip to his in-term nadir (36%) in May. That figure remains below 50% as of August 2021, suggesting his party is at risk of losing control of at least one of the two houses of Congress in the Nov. 8 midterm elections.

Mr. Biden’s popularity has approached, but not yet reached, the levels of his predecessor, Republican Donald Trump, which had plummeted to 33% in December 2017.

The national poll was conducted online, in the English language, among a representative sample of 1,005 adults, of whom 445 said they supported the Democrats and 357 supported the Republicans. The margin of statistical error is ±4%.
