Big explosion in China kills a person leaves more than 20 wounds

At least one person died and another 21 were injured after an explosion reached a residential area in Shanxi province in northern China, creating clouds of smoke and shattering glass in nearby buildings, state media said on Wednesday (30).

The explosion occurred around 1:17 pm (02:17, Brasília time) in the city of Taiyuan in Shanxi, state broadcaster CCTV said, adding that the cause is being investigated and that two people remain missing.

Images that circulate on the Chinese social network Weibo, not verified by Reuters, seem to show several flames outside a building, with dense smoke coming out of cars and some residential windows.

Also according to CCTV, a total of 210 firefighters and 43 trucks were mobilized to intervene on site.

The explosion occurred just a day after a fire in a restaurant in the province of Liaoning, in northeastern China, to kill 22 people. President XI Jinping described the case as “a deeply serious lesson.”

Liaon’s authorities said the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, but have ruled out an explosion of gas or a criminal fire.

Recent events follow a series of similar accidents throughout China in recent years. Earlier this year, a fire killed eight people and injured 15 in a vegetable market in the province of Hebei, in the north of the country.

Already in April, in the same place, 20 people died in a fire that hit an apartment for the elderly in a nursing home.
