“Biggest test” for Israel begins when ceasefire begins, says minister

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said the “biggest test” for the Israeli government will begin at 11pm Brasília time, 4am on Wednesday (27) local time, when the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah will come into force.

“Tomorrow, at 4 am, the biggest test of the Israeli government begins, perhaps one of the biggest tests of Israeli governments in general”, published Smotrich on Telegram, this Tuesday (26).

“If we comply with the agreement, we will guarantee Israel’s security forever. I voted in favor because I believe we will comply with it”, he said.

Reasons for the ceasefire

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu listed three reasons for a ceasefire with Hezbollah. The speech took place in a televised speech this Tuesday (26).

THE CNN learned from an Israeli official that the country’s Security Cabinet approved the ceasefire proposal, which will begin at 11pm (Brasília time) and will last for 60 days.

The Prime Minister highlighted that there is three reasons to seek a ceasefire:

  • focus on Iran
  • replenish weapons supplies and give the Army a rest
  • and isolate Hamas

He stressed that Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran and allied with Hamas, is considerably weaker than at the start of the conflict.

“We set it back decades, eliminated its top leaders, destroyed most of its rockets and missiles, neutralized thousands of fighters and obliterated years of terrorist infrastructure near our border,” he said.

“We are targeting strategic objectives across Lebanon, shaking Beirut to the core,” he added.
