Bild director accused by women of moral harassment, bullying and abuse of office

The director of the German newspaper Bild, Julian Reichelt, who is the subject of an internal investigation following complaints from several women, has requested the temporary suspension of his managerial duties, the Axel Springer publishing group announced.

“In order to allow explanations to be given and not to burden the work of the pension, he asked the board of directors to temporarily resign from his duties until the complaints are clarified,” the group said in a statement.

The director of Bild has received many complaints of moral harassment, intimidation and abuse of managerial position.

The Axel Springer Group has decided to conduct an investigation by a law firm into “possible breaches of compliance” with the newspaper’s values and rules by its 40-year-old director.

According to research by Der Spiegel magazine, Julian Reichelt promoted trainees with whom he had an affair, before dismissing or even firing them. Workers had been notifying management for months, which was slow to confirm allegations against the powerful German tabloid director.

Julian Reichelt “rejects the accusations”, the group’s announcement clarifies.

With a circulation of 2 million, Bild, founded in 1952, bet on light topics, sports and secular issues to become the first German newspaper to circulate.
