Bild: Former Chancellor Schroeder had a long meeting with Russian President Putin on the war in Ukraine

Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder had a long meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday night in an attempt to find a diplomatic solution to end the war in Ukraine, according to a report in the Sunday edition of the newspaper Bild amild however, there is no information on the outcome of the talks.

Citing a detailed picture of Schroeder’s activities, the German newspaper reports that the former chancellor also had a long discussion with one of Putin’s closest advisers.

He left Moscow early Saturday morning with his wife for Istanbul, according to the report, which did not provide details on the content of the talks.

The former German chancellor, who is a personal friend of Putin and has ties to Russian companies, had met Ukrainians associated with the delegation of Kiev negotiators in peace talks with Russia, writes Bild am Sonntag.

According to the source quoted by the German newspaper, Schroeder was the only one who had direct contacts with both Putin and top Ukrainian officials.

The Politico news website first reported that Schroeder had traveled to Moscow for talks with Putin, and chancellor sources said the German government had not agreed to a meeting or was involved in it. The German government’s press office cited statements made by Chancellor Olaf Solz on Friday, when he declined to comment on the meeting beyond taking into account the results and including them in other efforts in which he participated.

Solz, who is leaving for Turkey on Monday, spoke with Putin in a tripartite telephone conversation with French President Emanuel Macron on Saturday.

The former German Social Democrat chancellor (1998-2005) is on the board of the Russian oil giant Rosneft and also chairs the shareholder committee of the company in charge of the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which has stopped.

He accepted calls from German government officials to step down due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Reuters reports that he tried to contact Schroeder’s office, but to no avail.
