Bild: People are afraid of Putin’s general mobilization on May 9

Everyone is looking at Moscow with excitement and concern on Monday, as Bild recalls, Russia celebrating “Victory Day” against the Nazis on May 9. Vladimir Putin will deliver a speech in Moscow’s Red Square.

The question is what Putin will announce, whose aggressive war in Ukraine has been waged with undiminished ferocity for 74 days, the same publication states.

“Predictions for May 9 are unbelievable. Some believe that Putin could mobilize all the country’s soldiers and reservists for the war,” Russian journalist Maksim Kurnikov wrote in the Bild am Sonntag.

Kurnikov was deputy editor-in-chief of the independent radio station Ekho Moskvy before closing down due to his critical reporting.

Other Russian experts believe that Putin could declare “de-Naziization” of Ukraine and annex the territories to the east occupied by the Russian army. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has now even warned Russia against using nuclear weapons.

“Our message is clear: after a use of nuclear weapons, there will only be losers on all sides,” Stoltenberg told Welt am Sonntag. “You can not win a nuclear war and it should never be fought, and that’s true of Russia.” However, Stoltenberg also said that NATO had no evidence that Russian nuclear weapons were on high alert since the start of the war.

Traditionally, on May 9, the heroic deeds of the Red Army in World War II are celebrated with great festivities throughout Russia, and a military parade of tanks crosses Moscow, Bild reports.

Until a few years ago, the message of May 9 in Russia was a clear “never again war,” says Kurnikov. But that slogan has since been replaced by a formidable “We can win again.”

In fact, Putin wanted to declare victory over Ukraine this time, but his troops are far from it.

“The cult of victory has become a religion in Russia,” Kurnikov wrote.

But in recent weeks it has become clear: Putin’s army has been completely overestimated, as according to Bild:

-The supposedly large, powerful and well-equipped Russian army fails to invade much smaller Ukraine.

-The troops in front of the capital Kyiv were forced to withdraw again, humiliated.

-The pride of the Russian Black Sea Fleet was sunk by the Ukrainians.

-The much-publicized Easter attack has not made any progress in weeks.

Now, a Ukrainian counterattack has successfully pushed the Russians even out of Kharkiv, a city of more than a million people in the northeast.

People in Russia should be aware of these losses as little as possible.

“For all those who have always believed in Putin’s victory, a new propaganda attack on May 9 will help them rule out the reality – price increases, the disappearance of Western brands, the ban on flights to Europe, rampant inflation, the replacement of television entertainment programs with endless propaganda shows. ”

And all those who do not want to close their eyes will move away from the ubiquitous “Z” banners and suffer from the fact that an important day of remembrance for them has become a day of militarism, Kournikov said. “That they can not influence all this, that they must watch their country turn into a dictatorship similar to the one that was defeated in 1945.”
