Björn C. was one of many Germans who volunteered to fight in Ukraine against Vladimir Putin’s troops, according to Bild.
Björn C. has now been killed there, according to his unit, the International Defense Legion of Ukraine (ILDU). The volunteer organization did not provide any information on when, where and under what circumstances he died. According to the German Foreign Ministry, the German embassy in Kyiv is trying to clarify the situation and is “in contact with the Ukrainian authorities who spread the news”.
In a statement, the ILDU also paid tribute to three other foreigners who gave their lives fighting for Ukraine: “We lost our brothers in battle, but their bravery, memory and legacy will inspire us forever.”
In addition to Björn C., the Dutchman Ronald V. (55 years old) also served in the volunteer unit. He was killed in artillery fire near Kharkov in early May. His partner, Frenchman Wilfried B. (32), was killed on June 1 in the Kharkiv region, according to the “Libération”.
The volunteer unit also reported Michael O. (47 years old), who was killed a week ago. However, it is not clear whether the Australian fought as a soldier. According to his family, he is said to have transported wounded from the front line, as reported by “ABC”.
According to the International Defense Legion, nationals from many countries are fighting on the side of Ukraine, such as Denmark, Israel, Poland, Croatia and the United Kingdom.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selensky had announced the formation of an international brigade of volunteers shortly after the start of the Russian offensive against Ukraine in late February. According to Ukrainian sources, about 20,000 volunteers from around the world have registered. Russia said this week it had killed “hundreds” of foreign fighters in Ukraine.
