The American magazine Billboard made a list of the 500 best pop songs of all time last Thursday, the 19th.
The commemorative selection is part of the 65th anniversary of the Billboard Hot 100, a chart that lists the biggest hits in the music industry.
However, the songs chosen are not just from the pop universe, but rather convey the concept of “popular songs”. Other artists from rock, R&B and rap styles also gained space.
“Pop is the backbone of not just the music industry, but culture in general,” explained the magazine.
The only criteria used was that each song had once been on the Hot 100 – with the exception of some of the hits from the 1990s, which were not eligible for the chart at the time.

1. “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” (“Who Loves Me”) – Whitney Houston
Released in 1987, the hit is part of the album that bears the same name by the artist and was the soundtrack to the classic film “De Repente 30” (2004), with Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo.
The following year, at the American Music Awards (AMA), for the song, the artist won the Favorite Pop or Rock category.
2. “Dancing Queen” – ABBA
From the album Arrivalfrom 1976, the song is one of the band’s biggest hits to date.
3. “My Girl” – The Temptations
Part of the album The Temptations Sing Smokey, from 1965, the song is one of the American group’s biggest hits. She was also featured on the soundtrack for “My First Love” (1991), starring Macaulay Culkin and Anna Chlumsky.
4. “I Want It That Way” – Backstreet Boys
The American band Backstreet Boys managed to reach the top five with the hit “I Want It That Way”, from the 1999 album Millennium.
The song was nominated for three awards at the Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year and Record of the Year.
5. “Since U Been Gone” – Kelly Clarkson
The song is part of the artist’s second album, Breakaway2004.
6. “Like a Prayer” – Madonna
The Queen of Pop was not left out of the list. The chosen song has the same name as his album, released in 1989.
7. “Billie Jean” – Michael Jackson
The King of Pop also occupied a place in the top 10. The chosen success was from the album Thrillerfrom 1982.
The song won two Grammys, an American Music Award (AMA) and a nomination for the Video Music Producers Hall of Fame.
8. “Call Me Maybe” – Carly Rae Jepsen
Released in 2012, on the album Kiss, the hit was a worldwide success. On YouTube, there are more than 1.5 billion views.
9. “California Love” – 2Pac and Dr. Dre
Music is part of the project California Love, from 1995, and is still one of the rapper’s hits today.
10. “I Want To Hold Your Hand” – The Beatles
The British group Beatles were not left out of the list. The song chosen is from the 1964 album Meet the Beatles!
