Cryptocurrency exchange Binance is among investors contributing to the payment of losses to victims of a $615 million digital currency theft, company Sky Mavis, the target of the attack, said Wednesday.
Sky Mavis, the Viatnamese company that runs the game Axie Infinity, said last week that it was hit by one of the biggest cryptocurrency thefts on record, leaving users unable to withdraw money from the game.
Repayment of the lost money will be through a combination of own funds and $150 million raised by investors including Binance and venture capital firm a16z, according to the company.
“Sky Mavis is committed to refunding all lost funds to our users and implementing strict internal security measures to prevent future attacks,” said Trung Nguyen, the company’s chief executive.
The part of the network that was hacked, a blockchain “bridge” called Ronin that allows users to move funds in and out of the game, will reopen after a security update and audits that “can take several weeks,” Sky said. Mavis.
Binance Chief Executive Changpeng Zhao stated that the company “strongly believes that Sky Mavis will bring a lot of value and growth to the industry” and that “it is necessary to support them as they work hard to resolve the recent incident.”
