The film, directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green (“King Richard: Creating Champions”) and starring Kinglsey Ben-Adir (“Secret Invasion” and “High Fidelity”), shows the trajectory of Bob Marley at the beginning of his career and in the fight for peace during political conflicts and civil war in Jamaica.

The biopic begins in Kingston in 1976, with Marley planning a peace concert in response to deep political divisions and violence. The musician moves to London after he and his wife Rita survive an assassination attempt and records the successful album “Exodus”.

Flashbacks also offer insight into Marley's childhood and youth.

This is the first time that Bob Marley has won a film based on his own story.

The singer's children, Ziggy and Cedella Marley, and his wife, Rita Marley, produce alongside Brad Pitt, Robert Teitel, Jeremy Kleiner and Dede Gardner. The director is also responsible for the script, along with Zach Baylin and Frank E. Flowers.

Bob Marley's legacy

Bob Marley dedicated much of his career in reggae music to dealing with political-social themes. The Jamaican's compositions denounced racism, social inequality, war and talked about black resistance, spirituality and social justice.

In 1978, the singer managed to bring together Jamaican Prime Minister Michael Manley and Edward Seage, leader of the opposition party, to join hands on stage and swear an oath of peace. The episode became known as the day “One Love” stopped the civil war.

According to his son, Ziggy Marley, the film was made “mainly to spread his message further, to put the message in a different medium, cinema, to reach another generation”.

The singer died in 1981, aged 36, from melanoma, a type of cancer.
