Birds seized from Anderson Torres die at Ibama

Of the 59 birds seized from the home of former Justice Minister Anderson Torres, 16 died under the care of Ibama (Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources).

The birds had been at the Wild Animal Sorting Center (Cetas) since April, when they were confiscated. In addition to the deaths, three disappeared.

The information is contained in the Federal Police investigation, which sent the case to the Federal Court. Torres was indicted at the beginning of the month for irregular possession of wild animals, mistreatment, stamp forgery and ideological falsehood.

The dead birds were of the species of true boll weevils and curiós.

The seizures took place in April after Ibama and Ibram (Brasília Environmental Institute) found alleged irregularities in the system. One bird was mutilated, according to Ibama.

“Weak conditions”

Regarding the dead birds, Ibama informed the CNN that some of the birds arrived at Cetas in weakened conditions, “unfortunately resulting in deaths”.

The birds that died were sent for necropsy at the University of Brasília (UnB) and underwent an examination conducted by the Federal Police. Ibama awaits the results of the reports.

“It is important to highlight that the animals were housed in conditions that indicate deprivation of sun exposure, possibly compromising their well-being. During the seizure, some birds had missing feathers in areas such as the back, head and hind limbs, as well as fragility in their beaks, with brittle signs,” said Ibama.
