Birthday withdrawal starts this Monday; see if it’s worth drawing out

From this Monday (3), Brazilians born in January can withdraw the values of the withdrawal-birthday of the FGTS (Guarantee Fund for Time of Service). Those who requested an advance benefit may also receive payment.

The birthday withdrawal allows you to withdraw part of the balance from the worker’s fund account in the month of his/her birthday. However, there are some rules for the withdrawal to take place.

The request must be made through the FGTS application, through Caixa’s website or at any branch.

Those who place the order in the month of their birthday will receive payment in the same year.

Therefore, if those born in January choose to request payment by the 31st, they will receive the amounts still this month. However, if these people apply for the benefit starting in February, Caixa will only make the money available starting next year.

Whoever chooses to withdraw the withdrawal-birthday will lose the right to withdrawal-withdrawal, which is the payment of the entire amount of the FGTS to the employee in the event of dismissal.

For these people, it will only be possible to withdraw a 40% fine.

What is the best alternative?

With the benefit available, some people may question whether or not it is worth making the withdrawal. According to CNN economics analyst Priscila Yazbek, it is not recommended to withdraw your birthday in cases of request via loan.

This is because, for Brazilians in this condition, there is an interest rate of 1.49% per month, around 20% per year.

“If it’s the loan option, it’s better to wait until your birthday is there. It’s the same with the Income Tax, which allows you to anticipate the refund, but it’s not always the best alternative because of the interest, unless you need to pay debts”, he said.

According to her, economists say that it is always worth withdrawing the FGTS, as the money yields very little parked in the Fund.

“If we do math, it’s better to withdraw the amount because the FGTS yields around 5% a year, and today we have applications that pay more than 10%”.

However, Yazbek makes the reservation that discipline is necessary if the chosen option is the withdrawal of the benefit.

“This is recommended if the person is disciplined and makes the withdrawal to pay off debts or choose a more profitable investment. If you’re going to withdraw to use the money for superfluous expenses, it’s better to leave it in the FGTS, because, despite the low yield, it will be a savings”, he pointed out.
