Births in the US at the lowest level since 1979 in 2020

Rapid is the fall that occurred on births in the US in 2020. Their numbers reached their lowest level in more than four decades last year, a trend that was also observed in Europe, as the coronavirus pandemic forced more people to care for sick relatives or pushed them into unemployment.

The birth rate in the United States, which measures the number of births per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44, fell by 4% in 2020 to reach approximately 3.6 million babies.

This is the sixth consecutive year that the birth rate in the United States has decreased, while in 2020 the lowest birth rate since 1979 was recorded, according to data from the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The CDC, according to the Athens News Agency, did not attribute this reduction only to the pandemic, but experts had predicted that factors associated with the health crisis, such as stress, would affect the birth rate in the US.

In general, the birth rate in the US has been declining in recent years as women get married at an older age and delay becoming mothers, especially in the years when the economy is hit.

In December 2020, the Brookings Institution announced that it expects about 300,000 fewer births in 2021 in the United States.

A similar trend is observed in many European countries. In Italy in December, nine months after the country’s first lockdown was imposed, births fell by 22%.

Big companies like Reckitt, Nestle and Danone have also reported a drop in sales of their baby products, which is partly due to reduced fertility rates.
