Mining company Bitfarms is moving the power of the de la Pointe data center to a Quebec area remote from populated areas.
Bitfarms, which specializes in bitcoin mining, announced that it has acquired a land plot for a production site in a region of Quebec that is remote from populated areas to house the Garlock mining farm with a capacity of 18 MW. The new data center is designed to replace the capacity of the de la Pointe mining farm.
Bitfarms President Geoff Morphy said that the construction of a new data center will allow the use of hydroelectric power:
“After launch, the total planned capacity of our three Sherbrooke farms, including Leger and The Bunker, will fully utilize Hydro-Sherbrooke’s contracted 96MW of power.”
The new facility, equipped with “the latest noise reduction and monitoring technologies,” will be located far from populated areas. Previously, Bitfarms was criticized by residents of the town of Sherbrooke in the province of Quebec, who live near the mining enterprise de la Pointe. Criticism has not abated even after the company took measures to reduce the noise level from the operation of mining equipment.
The total investment that Bitfarms is investing in the new facility is approximately 2.25 million Canadian dollars ($1,760,000) and 25,000 common share warrants, which will allow holders to purchase Bitfarms shares at a set price.
In November, Canadian mining company Bitfarms announced that it plans to launch a mining center in the US state of Washington. The energy to power the equipment must be supplied from renewable sources. A little earlier, after an official request from Argentine legislators, Bitfarms provided detailed information about a 210 MW mining center under construction in Cordoba. In April, Bitfarms signed an agreement with an electricity supplier in Argentina to consume up to 210 MW of electricity.
