Bitfinex controls the largest Lightning Network nodes

Paolo Ardoino, who became the new CEO of Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin, in October 2023, made a statement about the operation of the Lightning Network.

Ardoino claims that the Bitfinex crypto exchange is not only involved in the development of the Lightning Network project, but also manages two of the three largest nodes on the network. According to Tether’s CEO, she launched them back in 2019.

This information confirmed exchange representatives:

“One of the exchange’s most significant contributions was its early and robust support for the Lightning Network. Bitfinex recognized the potential of the Lightning Network soon after its creation and began planning its integration almost immediately. Bitfinex operates two of the largest and most liquid nodes on the Lightning network, reaffirming its commitment to Bitcoin’s scalability level.”

Previously, Ardoino announced a mobile application with support for the Lightning network. Also, the idea of blockchain integration was supported by some exchanges. In June 2023, the Binance crypto exchange launched Lightning Network nodes, and in September, the head of Coinbase, Brian Armstrong, confirmed the exchange’s plans to support this protocol.
