Bitfinex exchange hackers transferred 94.6 bitcoins to an unknown wallet

The hackers who stole 120,000 bitcoins from the Bitfinex trading platform six years ago continue to cover up the traces of the crime. Another batch of bitcoins worth about $3.6 billion was recently transferred to an unknown address.

Cybercriminals move mining in small batches to hide BTC from law enforcement and blockchain security companies. The other day, hackers transferred 94.6 bitcoins to a new address.

For the first time, bitcoins stolen from the Bitfinex trading platform began to move in the summer of 2020. Then the attackers moved about 172 bitcoins. Since then, hackers have continued to transfer stolen crypto assets to unknown addresses.

In August 2020, Bitfinex offered hackers 30% for the return of 120,000 BTC stolen in 2016. Alternatively, the exchange said, anyone who helps Bitfinex contact the hackers will receive 5% of the refund, while hackers will receive 25%. On the exchange, the compensation to the attackers was called “associated costs.”

During the investigation, it was possible to name at least some of the suspects in hacking the site. In 2019, brothers Eli Gigi and Assaf Gigi were arrested in Israel and accused of hacking Bitfinex and organizing phishing attacks. In 2021, a hacker from the Indian state of Karnataka called himself involved in hacking the Bitfinex and BTC-e exchanges, phishing, and numerous attacks on other sites. According to the Indian, the Bitfinex hack was his first major attack on a cryptocurrency exchange.
