Bitfinex Halted Trading For Three Hours Due To An Unknown Failure

Bitfinex suddenly went offline this morning without giving any reasons. Trade was fully restored in about 3 hours.

Bitfinex is a Hong Kong-based cryptocurrency exchange established in 2014. Before a major hack in August 2016, it was the largest cryptocurrency trading platform.

An unknown crash occurred at Bitfinex today and users were unable to access their assets. The first reports of problems from the exchange itself appeared at 10:30 Moscow time (7:30 UTC), the trading process was completely stopped at 10:43. After a while, the exchange announced a gradual restoration of functioning.

“We have practically figured out the situation. The Bitfinex platform will return to viewing mode at 9:55 UTC. Starting from 10:00 it will be possible to cancel orders until trading opens at 10:05. Thank you for your patience, ”a message appeared on the status page and on Twitter of the exchange.

Now all exchange systems: web servers, trading engine and API streams, are working as usual. What exactly happened has not yet been specified – it may have been a DDoS attack.

On September 28, a similar crash occurred on the OKEx exchange. CEO Jay Hao called the attack “large-scale” on his Weibo account. On February 19 of this year, the Binance exchange also suddenly went into maintenance for several hours.
