Black Consciousness Day: event to debate Culture, Education and Justice

According to the United Nations, the black population in Brazil is the one that suffers most from social inequality. The 2021 Atlas of Violence, produced by Ipea and the Brazilian Public Security Forum, shows that the chance of a black person being murdered in Brazil is 2.6 times greater than that of a non-black person. And when it comes to femicide, the data are even more alarming — 66% of all women murdered in the country are black.

According to Tom Farias, curator of the 2nd Expo Internacional Dia da Consciência Negra, the focus is to reflect Brazil today, looking at the past. “Both the history of Independence – which completes two hundred years – and the process in which the abolition of slavery took place in the country are parts of the elements that led us to several questions, which we brought in the form of themes to share with the public, in the general scholars, students and professors, which Brazil we want for the future and for the new generations. We certainly ask about the dimension of celebrating Black Consciousness Day, the reflection of this date in society, such as São Paulo, and the dimension of structural racism, which continues to cause harm, offenses and, many times, to sacrifice lives, both from the from a psychological point of view, based on self-esteem, as well as from a physical point of view, with death – even today, most of those who lose their lives due to violent actions, whether by the police or others, are part of the black population, in São Paulo or in the country ” reflects.

On the 18th, 19th and 20th of November, the 2nd International Expo, in São Paulo, will promote meetings with three main themes: Culture, Education and Justice. The action will bring dialogues, debates, plural and inclusive programming. For the curator, the event is necessary in Brazilian society, especially when it comes to racism. “From the point of view of the anti-racist struggle, working on actions that lead to the denunciation of racism and make reflections in the field of how many racial gestures and acts still take place in the country today is a response of resistance to racial supremacist groups, which, in general, , preach a fair society, but maintain racial practices, often filled with hatred, against the black population in general”, he points out.

Historical context

Law 10.639/03 establishes, in the school curriculum, the obligation of teaching Afro-Brazilian cultural history in regular public and private education.

“The fact that it is not part of their reality of life means that a good portion of Brazilians – in general non-blacks – do not give importance or treat the issue with the seriousness it deserves, or join the anti-racist struggle in the country – it is like if this problem did not concern them, but only blacks”, observes Tom Farias, who is also a researcher in the area of rescuing figures of great importance to Afro-Brazilian history, culture and literature.

Still on education, Tom completes “in Brazilian society as a whole, it is much easier to see primary school students, that is, elementary and high school, talk about Greece, France, Egypt or even the United States. This does not happen when we talk about the African continent. Ignorance is so great that many refer to Africa as a single region. The African continent is the third largest in the world and the second most populous, but we barely know its great riches and culture” debate.

Racism: everyone’s problem

According to the Court of Justice of the Federal District and Territories – TJDFT, the difference between Racism and Racial Injury is the direction of conduct, both are crimes. Racial Injury is the offense directed at a specific individual, while racism is the offense against a collective, for example, an entire race in which there is no specification of who was offended.

“Advances in the fight against racism in Brazil have been moving forward, but at very slow steps. Today, there is still no more serious policy to deal with the problem in corporations, business groups, the public sector, and, above all, in Brazilian education, from basic training. A student does not know everything about African countries – which are 54 in all their extension – and this causes many doubts and lack of intellectual apparatus to understand the racial problem. On the other hand, Brazilian educational background teaches that black is linked to “slave”. This is nonsense. In Africa, this word was only used by the colonizers, because for the population of those countries, being “slave” never existed. They consider themselves ‘enslaved’, yes. In Brazil, this term has already been used frequently by the black social movement. This action can be considered a part of this advance we are talking about” concludes Tom Farias.

The 2nd International Expo Day of Black Consciousness will take place between the 18th and 20th, at Expo Center Norte – Pavilhão Branco.
