Black Friday 2022: Know when it will be, meaning and tips on what to buy

Considered one of the most important dates for trade, the sexta-feira Negra 2022 is coming to Brazil.

After two consecutive years impacted by the pandemic, a survey by Mercado Livre showed that 78% of Brazilians want to spend more in this edition of the event – and are already financially preparing for it.

If you are part of this group and are already planning to take advantage of the lowest prices, or are still in doubt whether to spend or not, CNN separated some of the most common questions about the date. Check out now how Black Friday 2022 will work:

What does Black Friday mean? How did the date start?

Black Friday is an event imported from the United States, known worldwide for offers in physical and virtual stores.

There is no consensus on the emergence of the date: it is known that the name has existed since the 19th century, and that it takes place following the Thanksgiving holiday, that is, on the last Friday of November.

According to the Brazilian Institute of Consumer Defense (Idec), Black Friday has been practiced in Brazil since 2010, and started as an exclusively online event that went on to physical retail, including small and large businesses.

Currently, the date is consolidated in the Brazilian trade calendar.

When will Black Friday be?

Black Friday always takes place on the last Friday of November, the day after the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States. This year, it takes place on the day November 25th and ends only on Monday (28), called Cyber Monday (more information below🇧🇷

There are also some companies that extend promotions until Monday (28), called Cyber Monday. (more information below)🇧🇷

But not all brands follow this schedule. Shopkeepers have adhered to advance promotions, special discounts throughout the month and even “warm ups” for Black Friday throughout the week. There are even names like “Black Week”, which emerged to unify the set of offers that take place in the second half of November.

If you have your eye on a specific store or website, it’s worth following them throughout the month to check when the promotions will start, if they happen.

How does Black Friday work?

In general, Black Friday works as follows: merchants reduce the profit margin by unit, seeking to gain in volume. This is possible because, as the date has been consolidated in the country, there is a greater number of customers circulating through the stores and website in search of these promotions.

Are all businesses and services required to join Black Friday?

Not. However, stores that choose to adhere to the date must communicate the offers and respect the Consumer Protection Code.

Is Black Friday worth it?

Discounts represent the biggest attraction of Black Friday for consumers, but this is not the only factor that must be considered before making a good purchase.

The National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon), linked to the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, reinforces that consumers should not get carried away by offers and make purchases on impulse, especially when there are chances of indebtedness.

In other words: the discounts offered are worthwhile when the product or service purchased is really useful, making sense within the consumer’s budget. “It is important to be careful to buy only what is necessary”, writes the agency.

What to buy on Black Friday?

The National Confederation of Trade in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC) carried out a survey this year to assess the potential for effective discounts during Black Friday. For 40 days, the entity collected 180 prices of the most searched items on the internet and found that 39% of them showed a downward trend.

The main highlights of the survey were the 17% decline in the value of male shoes 13% in washing machine 10% in smartwatch and 8% in headphones 🇧🇷

Also, a survey carried out by Neotrust, a company that provides data and intelligence on Brazilian e-commerce, showed that the most consumed products in 2021 were:

  1. Fashion and accessories;
  2. Beauty and perfumery;
  3. Telephony;
  4. Small appliances;
  5. Home appliances.

What precautions should I take during Black Friday?

In order not to fall into scams during Black Friday, Idec published a series of tips to prevent and take advantage of promotions responsibly.

According to the institute, researching prices before buying is essential. Visit different websites and stores in advance and research the price, terms of sale and product specifications.

Some websites and the Procons carry out price monitoring to help consumers choose companies with a good reputation.

To protect yourself, save the leaflet, take a picture of the computer or cell phone screen with the product demonstration, value, and with information on the link, company name, date and time when the search was carried out.

Senacon also warns consumers to pay extra attention to purchases via e-commerce, where misleading practices are more common.

What are the best websites and stores to buy on Black Friday?

For Black Friday, there is no cake recipe. Consumers need to research and look for products and offers that are most in line with their needs and long-term goals — of course, always taking financial responsibility into account.

Regarding websites, however, Idec indicates that it is essential to check their reputation and security before making purchases. Check out some tips provided by the institute:

  • Make sure that the company exists, verifying that it has a physical address and SAC (Customer Service).
  • Access the complaint history at the Procon in your municipality and at the Ministry of Justice’s website Consumidor.gov.br to check the store’s reputation.
  • Consult the Procon-SP list, with about 500 sites to avoid🇧🇷
  • When accessing the electronic address, check if a padlock appears in the left corner of the search bar. If it is visible, the store is probably safe.
  • Also avoid sites that only accept payment via bank slip, as in addition to not going through verification by the card administrator, if there is fraud, you will not be able to recover the amount paid.
  • If you come across a fake company, report it to Procon.

Who monitors Black Friday advertisements and offers?

The Consumer Protection and Defense Programs (Procon) are responsible for monitoring the market during Black Friday.

The institution monitors the prices of a sample of products to guide consumers as to whether the offers actually have the advertised discount.

In specific cases of advertising, the National Council for Advertising Self-Regulation (Conar) is responsible for overseeing it.

How to avoid buying products with “masked up prices” on Black Friday?

Black Friday in Brazil ended up earning the nickname “Black Fraud”, as some stores adopt the so-called price make-up.

This means that they inflate the value of the products a few days before and then advertise the sale at a discount, and give the consumer the impression that it is a good buying opportunity. In other words: the product is “half double”.

According to experts consulted by the CNN platforms and plugins such as Zoom, Buscapé and Black Friday de Verdade help the consumer to protect themselves from false discounts that happen on that date.

Can I cancel a purchase made on Black Friday?

According to Procon-SP, in purchases made outside the commercial establishment – by telephone, at home, telemarketing, catalogs or internet – the consumer has a period of seven days to withdraw from the operation, without having to present justification.

In addition, you have the right to receive your money back, without having to pay any costs, including shipping and other fees. The period is counted from the date of purchase of the product or its receipt.

What is Cyber Monday 2022? When does it happen?

In addition to Black Friday, there is also Cyber Monday – in Portuguese, cybernetic Monday. Despite the name, the date is not limited to electronic products.

In Brazil, shopkeepers hold the event on the Monday following Black Friday, when they sell off stock of merchandise that has not been sold. This year, it takes place on the 28th of November.

It is called Cyber Monday because it became popular as an e-commerce event.
