Black Friday: 59.3% of online stores offer Pix payments, study says

In a year, transactions by Pix already surpass those made by bank slips, TEDs, DOCs and checks added together, according to data released by the Central Bank.

A study by the consultancy Gmattos shows that the acceptance of BC’s instant payment tool should boost e-commerce sales during Black Friday 2021, which takes place this Friday (26).

The survey shows that 59.3% of online stores in the country already use this method of payment. In addition, many of them offer some differential for those who choose the method, such as free shipping and discounts.

In the comparison between the September and November editions of the Gmattos de Pagamentos study, the acceptance of Pix by e-commerce in Brazil jumped 8.5 percentage points, from 50.8% to 59.3%. This growth should reflect on Black Friday this year, according to the consultancy.

For Gastão Mattos, co-founder and CEO of Gmattos, occasions such as Black Friday show that Pix is more advantageous for the retailer in relation to other means of payment, such as bank slips.

“Payment via bank slip generates potential inconvenience for the store on promotional dates, blocking the sale of an item in stock”, he says.

“The confirmation of payment can take two to three business days and, in case of withdrawal, which happens, on average, in 50% of cases, this prevents the sale to another customer during the period of propensity to consume”, he explains.

Specialists warn of risks

Despite the ease of completing a purchase with Pix, experts consulted by CNN Brasil Business point out that instant transaction methods are not the most suitable on Black Friday.

According to them, the risk of the consumer not receiving a refund in case of scams or purchases with values higher than the correct one is something to be taken into account.

“Avoid direct transactions. Despite being easier, this type of transfer makes the chargeback more complicated, unlike a credit card”, analyzes Milene Fachini Jacob, head of the fintech area at Baptista Luz Advogados.

Milene says the safest way to pay for online purchases is through a virtual credit card.

The lawyer of the Brazilian Institute of Consumer Protection (Idec) Igor Marchetti also says that, in the case of a scam or payment with a high value, by credit card, it is easier to solve the problem.

The lawyer also makes a reservation for the consumer to be careful with links received by social networks. “We must be careful with sales via WhatsApp, as many links with promotions sent by the app are actually data capture and fraud”, says Marchetti.
