Blackout in Buenos Aires in the middle of heat

Extensive power outages occurred in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, on Tuesday, leaving thousands of households and businesses without electricity in the midst of heat, with mercury climbing above 40 degrees Celsius from the highest temperatures on the planet.

Electricity companies Edenor and Edesur reported power outages as high temperatures caused increased grid demand to cool homes and businesses.

The National Energy Regulatory Authority (ENRE) said the Edenor power outage affected 700,000 consumers in the greater Buenos Aires region. Another 43,400 Edesur customers were left without electricity due to a fault in high-voltage lines at two of its substations.

At the same time, the water company AySA asked the residents of Buenos Aires to limit water consumption, as the blackout also affected the cleaning system.

The heat wave in Argentina is expected to continue until the end of the week, with temperatures around 40 degrees Celsius, according to the National Meteorological Service (SMN).

Edesur has assured that it is making every effort to strengthen the power grid in order to meet the growing demand.
