Cuba’s national power grid collapsed on Friday (14), said the country’s Ministry of Energy and Mines, leading to widespread blackouts in the capital Havana and throughout the Caribbean island nation.
Energy Ministry officials said that an electrical substation in Havana failed around 8:15 pm local time, cutting the energy of a large strip of western Cuba, including the capital.
The lights were turned off all the horizon of Havana’s waterfront, observed a Reuters witness, with only a few dispersed tourist hotels operating with fuel generators.
Reports in social media of peripheral provinces east and west of the capital suggested that much of the country of 10 million people was out of power.
The network failure follows a series of blackouts across the country at the end of last year.
Continuous hours of hours have been usual for months. The serious shortage of food, medicine and water has made life increasingly difficult for many Cubans, who in recent years have fled the island in record numbers.
