Blackout in Portugal and Spain was caused by a rare atmospheric phenomenon

REN, national energy chains, Portugal’s electric operator, stated that the fall in the country’s energy supply was the result of a failure in the Spanish network, related to a rare atmospheric phenomenon known as “induced atmospheric vibration”.

“Due to extreme temperature variations in the interior of Spain, there were anomalous oscillations in the very high voltage lines (400 kV),” said Ren. According to the operator, the complete restoration of the country’s power grid can take up to a week.

However, Portugal Prime Minister Luis Montenegro said the expected problem is still resolved today. In an interview with CNN he stressed that the origin of the blackout was not in Portugal.

The Spanish operator has not yet commented on Ren’s statement.
