A time-lapse video on Monday (28) captured the moment when Madrid was immersed in an almost total darkness while the city was reached power cuts at night.
A huge power outage paralyzed parts of Spain and Portugal, preventing aircraft flight, interrupting public transportation and forcing some hospitals to suspend their routine operations at the beginning of the day.
The Spanish Ministry of Interior declared a state of national emergency and the governments of the two countries called for emergency ministerial meetings while authorities tried to find out the cause of mass blackout, which began around 10:33 am.
Energy falls of this magnitude are extremely rare in Europe.
Half of Spain’s power grid is restored
Spain’s network operator restored the supply of electricity to about half of the country after a large blackout affected the Iberian Peninsula on Monday, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said.
The authorities have not yet established what caused the blackout and did not rule out any hypothesis, he added in a televised speech.
