BLACKPINK’s Jisoo reveals her biggest challenge in drama “Newtopia”

At a press conference held on January 7 in Seoul, actors Jisoo — also known for her career as a member of the K-pop group BLACKPINK —, Park Jeong-min and director Yoon Sung-hyun gave more details about the zombie drama Newtopia, which premieres on Prime Video on February 7th.

BLACKPINK in your area

Park Jeong-min, Jisoo’s love interest in the drama, revealed that he was a fan of BLACKPINK and was excited to work with the artist again. He made a cameo appearance with her in the film “Dr. Cheon and the Lost Talisman”, from 2023.

Jisoo returned the compliments: “When I heard that Park Jeong-min would be in ‘Newtopia’, I thought it would be an honor to work alongside him and director Yoon Sung-hyun.”

Zombies and romance

The plot follows soldier Lee Jae-Yoon (Park Jeong Min) and his girlfriend, Kang Young-Joo (Jisoo). Because it started his mandatory military enlistment at an older age, Jae-yoon finds himself anxious about his future.

“Young-joo gets a job before him, and Jae-yoon feels like he should let her go,” explains Park Jeong Min.

Due to the challenges of long-distance dating, they decide to take a break. Until, suddenly, a zombie outbreak spreads across the city. Thinking of each other, they decide to cross the zombie-infested city to be together again.

A good dose of comedy

South Korea already has major productions involving zombies, such as the film “Train to Busan” and the dramas “Kingdom” and “All of Us Are Dead”.

Director Yoon Sung-hyun, behind “Newtopia”, said he is a big fan of the genre: “I have always liked zombie films and series. When I read the script, I found it so fun that I was immediately hooked”, he declares.

For him, the most important thing was to create something that stood out from other works, since there are so many. In addition to humor being a element remarkable in the drama, the director also focused on characters with very distinct personalities.

Challenging action scenes

As expected of the genre, there are many action scenes, and the BLACKPINK member worked hard for this.

“Before going to the stunt academy, I didn’t even know how to do a forward somersault,” he reveals. “After training, I can do five in a row! It was so much fun that I couldn’t wait to train more.”

Regarding the biggest challenge when recording the drama, he said it was when the season changed, but the costumes remained the same. “Even with the heat, we needed to continue wearing warmer clothes”, he lamented.

Park Jeong-min praised his co-star: “I admire Jisoo for continuing to smile even during difficult scenes in the summer heat.”

According to director Yoon Sung-hyun, the actress and singer has the best physical resistance among the people she has worked with.
