Blinken’s meetings in Israel come at a time when the country appears to be prepared for a ground incursion into the Gaza Strip.

It is the second time that the secretary has been to Israel in less than a week. Blinken explained that he wanted to return to Israel to discuss his meetings with regional Arab leaders, many of whom have strongly and publicly condemned Israel’s airstrikes against Gaza.

Earlier on Monday, speaking alongside Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, he reiterated that the country “will always have the support of the United States”.

Blinken stated that the US has a “deep commitment to Israel’s right, indeed, to its obligation to defend itself and its people.”

Gallant, in turn, warned: “This will be a long war.”

“The price will be high, but we will win for Israel and the Jewish people and for the values in which both countries believe,” he pondered.
