US President Joe Biden will tell his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, during their conversation that Washington is determined to resolutely oppose any reckless or aggressive action by Moscow, but also to defend its territorial integrity, head of the State Department.
Speaking at Reuters Next, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that when the two leaders spoke, Biden would also express to Putin the US desire for greater predictability and stability in relations between the two countries.
When asked if Russia would invade Ukraine, Blinken replied: “I hope not.” He added that in order for the crisis to escalate, Russia would have to withdraw its forces near the Russian-Ukrainian border.
Referring to China, he said it would be “potentially disastrous” for Beijing to decide to invade Taiwan. “We have seen China try to change the status quo over the past two years,” he said, adding that he hoped the Chinese leadership would “take it very seriously” and not “hasten a crisis.”
On the issue of Iran’s nuclear program, Blinken said a new round of talks in Vienna earlier this week had ended because Tehran was currently unwilling to do what was necessary to return to the JPCOA nuclear deal. He warned, however, that the United States would not allow Iran to delay the process, while at the same time continuing to develop its nuclear program. If diplomacy fails, Washington will look for other options, he added.
The White House says it is ready to act if Russia invades Ukraine
The Biden government is preparing to impose sanctions or other measures on Russia if Moscow decides to invade Ukraine, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said today.
Psaki added that Russian President Vladimir Putin was taking steps to allow him to invade the neighboring country.
“This is why we want to prepare in an area where we have expressed serious concerns,” he added.
A White House spokeswoman said the United States was preparing for a possible telephone conversation with Putin to discuss the issue.
He added that US security assistance to Ukraine remained under consideration, but declined to say whether military planning was part of Biden’s overall plan for Ukraine.
