US Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed that the US spoke to Israel about the attack that killed at least seven aid workers at the World Central Kitchen in Gaza and called for “a swift, thorough and impartial investigation”.
“As we have done throughout this conflict, we urge Israelis on the absolute imperative to do more to protect the lives of innocent civilians – be they children, Palestinian women and men, or even aid workers.
– to get more humanitarian assistance to people more effectively,” Blinken said at a news conference with French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné in Paris.
Blinken also offered condolences “to the loved ones, the families, the friends, the colleagues of those who lost their lives, as well as those who were injured.” He praised the work of the nonprofit and its celebrity chef founder José Andrés.
“They have done extraordinary, courageous work, day in and day out, and critical work to try to ensure that people in need get what they need, starting with the most basic thing of all – food to survive,” he said.
Séjourné condemned the attack, stressing that the protection of humanitarian workers is “a moral and legal imperative to which everyone must adhere.”
