North Korea’s missile tests are deeply destabilizing and dangerous, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Thursday, adding that Pyongyang had not responded to any diplomatic overtures from Washington.
The Biden administration on Wednesday imposed its first sanctions on Korea’s weapons programs after a series of North Korean missile launches, including two since last week.
Blinken said in an interview with MSNBC that the United States has made it clear that it has no hostile intentions toward North Korea and is willing to engage in negotiations without preconditions.
“Unfortunately, not only has there been no response to these proposals, but the response we have seen…” he said.
“I think part of it is North Korea trying to get attention,” he said. “This has been done in the past. They will likely continue to do so.”
The United States and its allies are focused on ensuring they are protected and there are repercussions for the North’s missile activity, Blinken added.
